Yup it was great to go back. I was born in the Toronto area so it was only my third trip back ever but it was a great experience. In terms of it being unsafe, that was a big reason why my parents didn’t want me to go in the first place. I never went out shooting alone, I had to make a point of taking someone with me wherever I went. But it terms of people being hostile, I actually found that people were more willing to have their picture taken then in the West. Especially for middle class people, photographs are still a luxury so they were happy to stop and pose for me. Kids in particular make great subjects and parents aren’t fussed about who is taking their picture like they would be here. I even went to Shiri Jinnah Colony, which is a lower class area and shot in the streets there which I didn’t think I would be able to do. I had to have it arranged beforehand so that there was a driver with me and other people that my Chachi knew just in case something happened. They even started telling people that I was from a local newspaper haha.
I think maybe because I am a young girl and pretty non-threatening looking people didn’t seem to suspicious of me most of the time. If ever they did give me weird looks I would just be sure to turn away fairly quickly and maybe cover my camera with my dupata. You kind of just have to be observant of your surroundings and make sure there is someone with you who knows the area really well. Luckily I only had positive experiences shooting there and I would like to go back sometime soon.
